Surgeons With Ties to Medtronic Touted Unapproved Use of Bone Graft

infuse bone graftMedical device makers arent allowed to market their products for uses that havent been approved by the FDA. But that doesnt stop doctors from doing what they want with the stuff and telling their colleagues all about it.

Seems some spine surgeons with financial ties to Medtronic have touted the companys Infuse Bone Graft (pictured) for use in surgeries of the cervical spine a part of the spine for which the device, which prompts the growth of bone, has not been approved.

In July, the FDA sent out a letter to doctors warning of reports of life threatening complications when the device is used in the cervical spine.

The story lands on the front page of this mornings WSJ.

Medtronic says it has been active in warning doctors of certain problems related to use of Infuse, which spurs bone growth. And the company points out that the rate of complications is low and, reports to the FDA of problems represent one-tenth of 1% of the units sold.

Three so-called whistleblower lawsuits filed by former Medtronic employees who allege that the company paid inducements to doctors to use Infuse and other Medtronic spine products. Medtronic paid $40 million to settle two of the suits, and did not admit wrongdoing. A third suit is still pending, and alleges that doctors were paid inflated royalty payments and inappropriate consulting fees.

Medtronic says all payments to doctors are fully compliant with the law, and that the company has rigorous processes to ensure that all physician compensation is fair and at market value.

The complaint in the pending suit is online here; a response from the doctors named as defendants is here.

Once best known for his land tenure in the pat unit House of Pain, Everlast successfully reinvented himself in 1998 with the best-selling Honky Ford Sings the Blues, a largely acoustic, hip-hop-flavored elbow grease in the genre-crossing mould of Beck. Born Erik Schrody, Everlast number one surfaced in Los Angeles as a penis of Ice-T's Rhyme Syndicate Cartel, issue his debut album, Incessantly Everlasting, in 1990. When the record album failed to rule an audience, he formed House of Pain with Danny Boy and DJ Lethal; carving prohibited an image which john Drew to a great extent on Everlast and Danny Boy's shared Irish heritage, the trio managed to get over the stereotypes facing gabardine rappers and scored a massive hit with their 1992 single "Skip Around." Their self-titled debut LP also went atomic number 78, simply when follow-ups including 1994's Same as It Ever Was and 1996's Sojourner Truth Crushed to Earth Shall Rise Again failed to iterate House of Pain's early success, the radical disbanded. Everlast so returned to his solo life history, but piece recording Whitey Ford Sings the Blues he suffered a massive cardiac turn back stemming from a congenital mar, resulting in affection shunt surgical process and an artificial valve implant. Following his recovery, he completed the album, which appeared in the devolve of 1998 to stiff commercial notices: hit the Top Ten, going atomic number 78, and debut the Top 40 single "What It's Like." After appearance on Santana's vaunted replication album Occult, Everlast began work on a follow-up with an eclecticist mathematical group of guest artists. Titled Eat at Whitey's, the record album was released in tardy 2000, and enjoyed critical notice level if it wasn't quite an as succesful as Whitey Ford. Everlast so returned in 2004 with the moody, more song-driven White Trash Beautiful.

Dion sues her architect

Celine Dion says her architect doesnt know much about geometry and wants big bucks from him because of it, tmz.com reports. Dion hired Florida architect Randall Stofft in 2005 to build her a $3-million US Jupiter Island pad complete with an octagonal living room. Stofft had a different vision, and Dion says he refused to build the house the way she wanted. Now the house still isnt finished, according to the Palm Beach Post, and Dion has filed suit asking for $250,000 in damages.
The architect had no immediate comment.

Pete Doherty - The Libertines Would Only Reform For An Album Says Barat

DIRTY PRTTY THINGS frontman Carl Barat has said that the only reason he would reunite with Pete Doherty to reform THE LIBERTINES would be to make a new studio album.

Barat told the Independent he would consider working with his former bandmate and BABYSHAMBLES singer again, once the DIRTY PRETTY THINGS had run its course.

"Once I've done what I'm doing now [Dirty Pretty Things], it [reuniting with Doherty] won't be hard at all," he said. "It may detract in the short term from what I'm trying to achieve.

"It's certainly a friendship I cherish. But I want to let it be for a while. A lot of my friends say you should only do a reunion if you're going to write a new album. I agree. Otherwise it's just a cash-cow, a glory-milker."

Barat implied that the link between the two was not irrevocably broken by pointing out that he still has a 'Libertine' tattoo on his arm.

Winehouse's mother says she's recovering

Amy Winehouse's mother Janis has spoken about her daughter's Grammy success, saying that she believes the singer is on "the road to recovery".
Winehouse picked up five Grammy awards but could not attend the ceremony in Los Angeles because of visa problems. She performed at the event via satellite from London.
Speaking on 'GMTV', Janis Winehouse said: "Well, as you saw, she looks good and it's a case of she's on the road, and that's what it's about, she's on the road to recovery."
"I think it would have been too much for her because all of the travelling and flying there, I mean seeing what the Grammys was like... we could see it live from there and I thought if Amy were there, she'd be lost in it, she'd be a little girl lost in it."
Speaking about her daughter's Grammys performance, she said: "Well, it's Amy coming back, she's definitely on the way back."
The star's mother also spoke about her fears for her daughter's health before she entered rehab, saying: "She was sort of with it but not with it, and that's the thing where I think fortunately, thank goodness in our family, she's got a solid family and we're all there for her."
